Placenta Encapsulation 101
Posted on: August 5, 2016 | Placenta Encapsulation
Recent years have seen an upsurge in the practice of placenta encapsulation, a centuries-old tradition of transforming the placenta into capsule form for ingestion. Historical records exist for placenta use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as far back as the 1500s. More and more, mothers are choosing to encapsulate their placentas to aid in their postpartum recovery. If this is your first time hearing of the practice, you likely have a lot of questions. So let’s cover the basics!
WHAT is placenta encapsulation?
In a nutshell, placenta encapsulation is a process through which the placenta is dehydrated after birth, ground into a powder, and placed into capsules for consumption. Those are the essentials. Besides capsules, the placenta can also be prepared as part of a soothing herbal salve—great for any skin issues, including those possible pregnancy-related stretch marks— and in tincture form—an extract that can be used as needed for years to come and which many women choose to save for the hormonal ebbs and flows of menopause!
WHY do people choose to encapsulate their placentas?
The answer to this question is highly individual, but most often reasons for encapsulating are related to many of the anecdotal benefits of placenta consumption: hormonal regulation, swifter healing after childbirth, increased energy levels, replenishing iron levels and other nutrients, boosting breastmilk production, and generally getting back to feeling more like yourself sooner.
It’s not surprising, then, that so many women are trying placenta encapsulation. If someone told you that something as simple as taking a pill, made from the most organic stuff you could find, could help you feel more balanced and ease your postpartum recovery, wouldn’t you be intrigued too?
WHO can encapsulate the placenta?
Unless there is a medical reason or hospital policy prohibiting release of the placenta, most women are able to keep their placentas for encapsulation. It is always a good idea to discuss your plans with your midwife or OB and verify the policies of your hospital or birth center.
At Boston Placenta, your placenta is processed by a professionally-trained Postpartum Placenta Specialist with intensive, hands-on training through ProDoula and OSHA certification for handling Blood Borne Pathogens. In an industry as unregulated as placenta encapsulation, Boston Placenta strives to maintain the highest standards in cleanliness, safety, and absolute transparency in our methods.
WHEN can the placenta be encapsulated?
The process can begin anytime once your placenta has been delivered. Boston Placenta will provide you with guidelines for storage and transportation of your placenta prior to processing. Keep in mind that the sooner the encapsulation can take place, the sooner you can begin enjoying the benefits!
The entire process takes place over 2 days, for approximately 2 hours on each day.
WHERE is the placenta encapsulated?
Our top priority at Boston Placenta is your wellbeing and satisfaction. For this reason, Boston Placenta will process your placenta in the privacy and comfort of your own home. This is the safest way to have your placenta encapsulated, as it gives you total certainty that the capsules you get do in fact contain your placenta. Furthermore, your home contains your very own biome: encapsulating within it ensures that your placenta is only exposed to germs you are already familiar with during the process. You can be as involved in the encapsulation as you want to be, or it can take place before you even return home from the hospital. You are free to ask questions, learn about the placenta, and take pictures or video to document your experience. No matter what, you will have no doubt that your placenta was handled with the utmost care and respect.
Furthermore, since all Boston Placenta encapsulators are trained postpartum doulas or lactation educators or counselors, you will get so much more than jar of capsules: your Postpartum Placenta Specialist will be a sounding board as you recount and process your birth story, answer any questions you may have about postpartum recovery and what to expect, provide breastfeeding support, and more, right in your own home. As an added bonus, your kitchen will be cleaner than it was when we arrived at the end of each day!
